Stuff We Love

WUDLA Recs

We are always asked for vet recommendations, dog walker recommendations, dog tainer recommendations, etc., so we thought it would be handy to create this quick little "WUDLA Recs" post to help guide you to choosing some fabulous services for you and your beloved pup(s).

Please note, we will grow this list as we discover more people and places and services we love.

Our Top Vet Recs:

The Village Vet

We absolutely adore the folks at The Village Vet in Silver Lake. I know Silver Lake is not the most convenient location for many of us; however, I promise you will not regret sitting in traffic to visit the staff at The Village Vet. They are a super friendly, well-informed, honest, and generous veterinary group and we are so happy our friends at Angel City Pit Bulls (http://www.angelcitypits.org/) referred us to them.

Dr. Shipp's Animal Hospital @ The Amanda Foundation

Dr. Shipp's not only provides excellent medical care, but also gives back to the rescue community. They are the only full service veterinary office in Los Angeles run by a non-profit animal charity – The Amanda Foundation.  The money you spend on your beloved animal companion(s) at Dr. Shipp's is used to help save the lives of less fortunate dogs and cats throughout Los Angeles.

Our Top Dog Trainer Recs:

L.A.K-9s

We recommend Colleen Steckloff at L.A.K-9s for just about any and all dogs with behavioral issues. From separation anxiety to aggression Colleen is able to tackle the whole spectrum of issues that may arrise with our dog companions. Colleen does private training sessions and also offers board-and-train options.

Our Top Daycare / Boarding Recs:

Please be very careful when selecting a doggie daycare or dog boarding facility.  There are a ton of places popping up throughout Los Angeles and the majority of these facilities are neither equipped nor experienced to deal with the majority of dogs they have in their care.  The lack of training, common sense, and secure faclities lead to negligence which can potentially result in your dog's death.

Don't be afraid to ask the tough questions — this is your responsibility as a doggie parent to do the homework! Has a dog every escaped your facility? Have dogs ever gotten in fights here? If yes, how do you deal with that? What is the ratio of staff to dogs at your facility? how many dogs to you house on a typical day? Etc…

We already know of two confirmed dog deaths within the last month due to negligence at two different daycare faclities on the Westside.  Do not be afraid to check the facilities surroundings and make sure they are secure. Dogs should not be able to jump the fences — any fences separating dogs should be at least 8 ft. All fences should be reinforced and there should be no windows or doors accessible to the dogs.  While "cage free" facilities are very popular right now, it is important that the faclity have crates/private rooms where the dogs can take "time outs" and have some downtime.

Dogs should also be crated and fed in private areas if they are boarding overnight.

I Hate Balls! – Look Good, Hate Balls, Save Lives!

There is (almost) nothing that makes me more angry than seeing someone with their Chihuahua with an enlarged Vulva waddling across the street or a Pit with huge balls at the dog park. After all, the LAST thing we need in L.A. is more Chihs and Pits! Take a stroll through any of the city and/or county shelters here and you will know exactly what I mean.

I actually have a neighbor who found a Terrier mix as a stray and took him in. I noticed after three months the dog was still unaltered, so I unobstrusively asked when he was making an appointment to get his dog neutered. He told me he wanted his dog to “experience having babies” and he was going to send the babies to his family in Mexico and Columbia. After 5 min of trying to educate this man on the importance of neutering his dog I realized I was getting nowhere. I bit my lip, clenched my fist and just walked away. There are no words…

Well, thank goodness there are celebrity folks like Katherine Heigle promoting spay and neuter. Heigle’s “I Hate Balls!” campaign is exploding and you can be part of it! You can purchase an adorable t-shirt (some are even pretty racy– my style!), onesie, or doggie shirt or even shoot a text to donate to this worthy cause.

Check out this awesome campaign here!

The Daily Willy – The Prince of Dog Blogs

The Daily Willy is my blog to show off the insane cuteness of my very first foster (foster failure that is) Willy! Willy was rescued from the Downer Shelter in May of 2010 by Perfect Pet Rescue . Willy was a handful from the get-go, so I was reluctant to bring him into my tiny studio apartment, but within a couple weeks he won me over and has become the most adorable cuddle bug ever. Get your daily dose of cuteness with The Daily Willy :)

earthdog

About earthdog in their own words…
earthdog manufactures the finest quality hemp collars, leashes, harnesses, beds and chew toys for the dogs in your life. our eco-friendly dog products are all handmade in the usa, and our inspiration comes from our pack, 16 strong. they’re all rescues from various walks of life who found their way to us. you’ll find their names on our collar patterns and their photographs throughout our website. we trust that the loved ones in your life will enjoy these offerings as much as ours do.

What’s so cool about earthdog? Two things…
one: in addition to our dogs, we open our house to strays we rescue and foster. we make sure the animals are healthy and spayed or neutered and then work to find suitable, loving homes for these deserving pets. over 20 million animals are put to sleep each year because there are not enough homes for them. you can do your part by spaying or neutering your pet and making sure your pet has id tags on at all times. everyone can help promote awareness and responsible pet ownership through education. these simple acts can make a big difference in a widespread overpopulation problem. the following are the pets we currently have available for adoption. please email us for more information.
two: earthdog donates 10% of profits to spay/neuter programs to limit the unwanted animal population.
